A prototype self-centering prestressedconcrete (SCPC) bridge pier andconventional reinforced concrete (RC) with similar backbone curves are designed and modeled. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance SCPC considering effect vertical earthquake ground motions. Under a severe motion, RC damage much greater than pier. shows great capability in reducing residual drift at top structure, therefore, probability survival increased. In study, external aluminum bars were used reduce energy impacts on structure. addition, averages maximum drifts piers under set 20 motion records impact different vertical-to-horizontal peak acceleration ratios response presented. results compared case horizontal-only excitations, clarify Hence, designers can find good solutions for structures earthquakes resistance.
